Tony Romo has received his share of criticism for some questionable play down the stretch in the Dallas Cowboys’ loss to the New York Giants on the opening Sunday of NFL play. For the first time in franchise history the Cowboys lost a game when leading by 14+ points in the fourth quarter and the big momentum changers were a lost fumble and interception by Romo. Romo has accepted blame for the loss and among those coming to his defense is the guy that counts the most since he signs his paychecks.
Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones took to the Dallas sports radio airwaves to defend Romo, focusing on the first three quarters of play:
“This may draw a little criticism, but I thought Tony played one of the best games I’ve ever seen him play. You can make a big case that the way he played for three quarters was how we got there at the end and looked like for sure we were going to get the win. But he played outstanding.”
Jones was unequivocal in his support for the starting QB:
“He’s a winner. We are going to rise and fall based on what Tony Romo’s about over the next several years, and I’m excited about that. We’ve got someone here that can, if we can get some other things together, we can have a team that gets us in position to have a shot.”
“This isn’t to pat him on the back or make him try to play better. I just want everyone to know how much confidence we have in his ability to win ballgames for us. He’s one of the two or three best assets that we’ve got to get where we want to go.”
Romo has also received support from his teammates with linebacker Keith Brooking and wide receiver Dez Bryant saying they’d take Romo over any other quarterback in the NFL.
The Cowboys are back in action this upcoming Sunday, taking on the 49ers at San Francisco. Dallas opened a -1 point road favorite but have been bet up to the current price of -3. The total for the game opened at 40.5 and has been bet up to the current price of 42.5.
