Tom Brady Looks Unstoppable, Again

Tom Brady wasted little time in making a case for another MVP season on Monday night. He lit up the pathetic Dolphins defense to the tune of 517 yards and four touchdowns in winning 38-24. It was another perfect performance for a guy with a seemingly perfect life. Three Super Bowl rings. Supermodel wife. Luscious head of hair. UGG for Men spokesperson.
Brady’s 517 yards was a team-record and the fifth highest total in NFL history. It included a 99-yard touchdown toss to Wes Welker late in the fourth quarter that sealed the deal against a pesky Miami team. Welker’s scamper was the longest play in Patriots history and the first of that distance on Monday Night Football since Brett Favre connected with Robert Brooks in 1995.
The only blemish on Brady’s night came early in the second half when a deflected pass was intercepted. He hit eight different receivers, led by Welker’s 8 catches fro 160 yards and two scores. Second-year tight ends Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski combined to snag 13 balls for 189 yards and a pair of touchdowns. New addition Chad Ochocinco caught one pass for 14 yards.
The Patriots rolled up a gaudy 622 yards, another franchise record. Miami had no answers for Brady’s plethora of playmakers. They were constantly on their heels, switching between zone and man-to-man alignments in an effort to slow what amounted to an unstoppable attack.
What does this mean for the rest of the NFL? It’s too early to know, but few defenses are equipped to limit Brady and Co. The Jets obviously have their number as of late. The Steelers looked old and slow in losing to Baltimore. The new-look Eagles secondary could present a challenge when the two teams meet in late November. Other than that, it appears to be clear sailing for most of the season.
Philip Rivers and the Chargers pay a visit to New England for Week 2. Right now the Patriots are giving 6.5 points.
