At one point in the NFL’s history, the league ran on painkillers and amphetamines. During the largely unregulated 1970′s some teams even employeed ‘drug doctors’ with sketchy credentials who served up pills by the bucketful before and during games. Those days are thankfully long gone, but Dallas’ Tony Romo might be something of a throwback when he tries to play against the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Romo reportedly will need additional painkillers due to the lingering pain caused by his broken rib.

Romo tapped his ribs and explained following Thursday’s practice:

“I would say this, there’s a test that just goes, come over here (lightly taps his rib area) and see how hard you can do it until I feel it. And if I feel it I’m going to need it.”

Despite the need for painkillers, Romo downplayed the severity of his mangled ribs:

“it’s a fracture. It is what it is. It either feels better or it doesn’t. It’s nothing really much more.”

He one again gave props to team equipment personnel who fashioned a protective kevlar vest:

“It did a good job. I thought it was good, I thought it helped. I’m not sitting there constantly thinking about it, that’s a good sign.”

At this point there’s no question about whether or not he’ll play, but he’s looking forward to next week’s bye:

“I’m not back to where everything is back to normal yet, but it’s definitely on its way. It feels good to keep the improvement side of it continuing to go.”

The Cowboys are coming off a hard fought 18-16 win over their arch rival Washington Redskins. Dallas failed to cover the pointspread as -3′ point home favorites in that game. The Detroit Lions are one of the surprise teams of the early NFL season and will bring an improbable 3-0 record to Cowboys Stadium this weekend. The current NFL betting line for the game has Dallas installed as a short priced -1′ point home favorite. The total for the game is set at 46′. The Lions are 2-0-1 against the pointspread so far this season while Dallas’ record is even at 1-1-1 against the Vegas line.
