Although its starting to look more and more like Indianapolis Colts’ superstar quarterback Peyton Manning will be out for the year, his dad says he’s in ‘good spirits’. Archie Manning recently gave the media an update on how his progeny is faring after neck surgery.

Archie recently visited Peyton in Indianapolis and said that he’s ‘feeling better’ but that his prospects for returning to the lineup this season remain unclear:

“I do not know. I really don’t. He was sore after surgery, but he’s finally feeling a little better after a week. … He’s in better spirits. We’ll see what happens.”

Peyton Manning was seen at the Indianapolis Colts’ practice on Monday–his first public appearance since having neck surgery on September 8. Additional, though unconfirmed, sources suggest that Manning traveled to Europe for a stem cell procedure prior to his latest surgery. He was unable to get this treatment in the United States.

Archie Manning said its tough for Peyton since he wants to be around the team and wants to help, but is unsure about his role on the sidelines:

“He wants to be around to help the Colts but he doesn’t want to overload. He doesn’t want to be out of place.”

Colts’ Vice Chairman Bill Polian had this assessment of Manning’s condition:

“He’s convalescing from the surgery and that will take a little while yet, and then at some point, the doctors will bring him back and assess his situation. We’re not sure when that will take place. He’s up and around, I can tell you that. But it is surgery, and there is a period of time where it takes its toll on you, and that’s where he’s at right now.”

The Colts have looked lost without Manning on the field and have opened the year 0-2 for the first time since his rookie season. They face a tough test this weekend as they host the Pittsburgh Steelers at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Steelers are -10′ NFL betting favorites on the road with the total for the game set at 39. Pittsburgh is looking to improve to 2-1 after easily beating the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
