The New York Giants have been hit hard by the injury bug in the early part of the 2011 NFL season, but on Wednesday they got some much needed good news. A couple of key contributors on each side of the ball–wide receiver Mario Manningham and defensive end Osi Umenyiora–returned to practice.

Manningham suffered a concussion against the St. Louis Rams last week and missed Sunday’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Although he was listed as a ‘limited participant’ in practice he said that he ‘did everything’:

“I’m good. I went out there and practiced the individual. Did team. I did everything. Feel better.”

He said that he’s not suffering any ill effects from the concussion:

“I feel better than I felt before I went out for the walkthrough last week. Sensitivity to light … I don’t have none. I’m good.”

Umenyiora practiced on a limited basis for the first time since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on August 19. Giants’ coach Tom Coughlin discussed his progress:

“There will be [limitations] but I don’t think he thinks of it as any kind of limitation. I’m hoping we can have one good day and then no repercussions the next day and that will help us understand what we got. I would like Osi to have some practice time. He definitely needs to spend some time on the field with his teammates and put him back in those situations.”

Both Manningham and Umenyiora have been upgraded to ‘probable’ on the NFL injury report. Also upgraded was defensive end Justin Tuck. Tuck didn’t practice, but is listed as ‘probable’ for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals. Coughlin echoed the optimism:

“He won’t practice but he has made good progress both days, and we are very encouraged by that part.”

The 2-1 Giants will play the 1-2 Arizona Cardinals in Tempe, AZ on Sunday afternoon. The Giants are a -1 point NFL betting favorite with the total set at 44. Although the New York list of players who are ‘Out’ for the game is still long there is hope that the three listed above will play. Less certain is the status of wide receiver Brandon Stokely, who is listed as ‘questionable’ with his strained quad muscle.
