The Cowboys are -3′ point home favorites on the NFL betting line but we’re thinking the general public isn’t giving the Washington Redskins the respect they deserve. This is an improving team with a very good coaching staff. Rex Grossman may always have accuracy problems and always be an interception risk, but he’s also a very good NFL quarterback–he’s passed for 400 yards in 3 of his last five games. Washington has a very capable backup in former BYU standout John Beck, so they’re in great shape under center.
Washington has dominated this series in recent years–at least on the road. The Redskins have covered the last four trips to Cowboys Stadium and have covered three of the last four meetings overall despite Dallas winning three of four straight up. The Cowboys are one of the big ‘public’ teams in the NFL and that combined with the perception that the Redskins’ early season success is something of a fluke gives us reason to play contrarian and go with the underdog.
Tony Romo’s ribs could also be a factor–he says he’s ‘good to go’ but he’ll be a target throughout. Jon Kitna isn’t a bad backup, but Romo’s toughness in playing through his injury gave the Cowboys an emotional lift in their last game. Losing Romo could have the opposite effect. Overall, we look for another hard fought rivalry game between these teams. We’ll take the points and look for this game to go Under the total. Both teams have the ability to put up points but this series has trended strongly Under with 3 of the last 4 meetings overall and 11 of the last 18 at Dallas failing to exceed the total. The Redskins are capable of winning this game outright but getting more than a field goal looks like a very strong position.
