Ultimate Fight Night 24: Nogueira Vs Davis Results And Recap
Added on Mar 27, 2011 by John Petit in
Ultimate Fight Night 24 took place tonight in Seattle, Washington in front of sell out crowd of 14,212 which is huge for their first visit to the city. The Bonuses for the event are as follows, and each fighter received $55k for their award.
Submission Of The Night: Chan Sung Jung
Knock Out Of The Night: Johny Hendricks
Fight Of The Night: Michael McDonald Vs Edwin Figueroa
It was a solid event for the promotion who ran half the card on Facebook, and four fights on SpikeTV.
Main Card
Light Heavyweight bout
Antônio Rogério Nogueira Vs. Phil Davis
I agreed with the decision of the fight, but the score cards were a joke. The first round I thought clearly went to Nogueira. Nogueira did have some problems with the reach of Davis, and at the beginning he was a little frustrated on gaging the timing of Davis. When he realized he could telegraph the takedown attempts from Davis he became a lot more comfortable on the feet. By the end of the first round Nogueira was landing more frequently and shaking off all takedowns. Davis landed a few decent kicks in the round, but I just don’t understand scoring it for him.
About half way through the second round the entire fight changed. Davis figured out that he couldn’t get the double leg takedown on Nog’, but Nogueira had no answer for the single leg takedown. After that, Davis got all the takedowns he wanted…whenever he wanted. Sadly, Nogueira didn’t really have anything off of his back BJJ wise, and worse yet Davis did very little damage from the top. However, he won the last two rounds getting single leg takedowns, and landing mediocre shots from inside the full guard of Nogueira.
Phil Davis defeats Antonio Rogerio Nogueira by unanimous decision (30-27 x3)
Welterweight bout
Dan Hardy Vs Anthony Johnson
Do you remember Hardy Vs GSP? Thats basically what happened in this fight, and one of these days Dan Hardy is going to show up at Matt Hughes’ gym-and his life will change. Johnson is the exact type of fighter that can give Hardy some problems, and he did…for almost 15 minutes. In Johnson’s defense, he was coming off a long lay off, and a weight cut no one thinks he can keep making, but he didn’t look all that impressive to me. Johnson was able to escape from submission attempts by Hardy, and Johnson did drop him, but the end of the fight was Johnson doing just enough to win. I hope he will be more calm and violent in his next bout. Even though this is Hardy’s 3rd straight loss, I don’t see this being his last fight in the UFC. He has stepped up in the past, and I am sure he will be rewarded.
Anthony Johnson defeats Dan Hardy by unanimous decision (30-27 x3)
Welterweight bout
Amir Sadollah vs. DaMarques Johnson
Johnson stepped in on late notice, and did better then most people thought. I think with a full camp for Johnson, this would have been a different fight. I scored the first round 10-9 when I first watched it, but its clear argument for a 10-10 round. It was a razor close round, and I thought DJ won it initially because he caught a teep kick from Amir and shoved him down. Amir got up right almost right away, but Johnson did get the takedown.
The second round was different, as Amir just to went to work on Johnson. At one point, Amir had cornered Johnson and was really lighting him up with punches and knees, and he took Johnson down. Johnson did get up, but was taken right back down. Amir then gift wrapped his arm around his head and began to land elbows. Mario Yamasaki stopped the fight when Johnson tapped to the strikes.
Amir Sadollah def. DaMarques Johnson via submission due to elbow strikes at 3:27 of round 2
Featherweight bout
Leonard Garcia vs. Chan Sung Jung
If you are anything like me, you thought Jung won the last fight when he fought Garcia. Jung stepped in on late notice when Phan was injured in training, and the rematch was on. The first round and a half looked a lot like the first fight, but Jung was a little more cautious and wasn’t going to just stand in front of Garcia and trade. Again, like the last fight, I thought Jung was getting the better of the majority of the exchanges. About half way through the second round, Jung was landing consistently, and Garcia threw an ill advised kick and he slipped and fell. Jung close the distance, and hopped on top of him. Jung postured up and Garcia tried to shrimp out and escape, but Jung hopped on his back and trapped his arm. He cranked on the neck of Garcia, and he was forced to tap with ONE second left in the round.
It was the first time anyone was submitted in the octagon via the twister, and Jung said in the post fight interview he learned it from watching Eddie Bravo videos(commonly referred to as the guy who invented the hold.)
Chan Sung Jung def. Leonard Garcia via submission (twister) at 4:59 of round 2
