UFCvs4

UFC on Versus 4 took place Sunday night in Pittsburgh, PA at the Console Energy Arena, and there was a lot of uncertainty and controversy heading into the card. The card was surrounded by the question of what happened to Nate Marquardt, and what did he do to get tossed out of the UFC? Unfortunately, because of strict rules in Pennsylvania, the UFC can not disclose what happened to Nate Marquardt as it is a “medical issue.” As it stands right now, Nate Marquardt is set to address it on Tuesday, but we really don’t know. UFC President Dana White said “I give people second chances, and Nate is no exception. I’m disgusted with Nate, and he doesn’t deserve to fight in the UFC.”

Fighters were awarded $50,000 bonuses.

Fight of the Night:

Nik Lentz vs. Charles Oliveira
Knockout of the Night:

Cheick Kongo
Submission of the Night:

Joe Lauzon

Heavyweight bout:

Cheick Kongo vs. Pat Barry
This fight became a quick candidate for not only KO of the year, but round of the year as well. After about 90 seconds of feeling each other out with leg kicks Pay Barry landed a huge over hand right that buckled Kongo. Barry went in for the finish but was missing with his punches, and Kongo scrambled to his feet. Barry then dropped Kongo again, and he fell straight back like he was out cold. Barry again went in for the finish, and when you watch the replay very few of his finishing punches landed clean. Kongo rolled to his stomach, and scrambled to his feet again while walking backwards. When Barry got in striking distance, Kongo landed a left behind the ear and a straight right right that knocked out Barry for two minutes. An amazing finish to an unexpected main event.

Kongo defeated Barry via KO (punches) at 2:39 of round 1

Welterweight bout:

Rick Story vs. Charlie Brenneman

Home town hero Charlie Brenneman wasn’t picked by many to win this fight. Rick Story had a tremendous amount of momentum heading into the fight after his win over Thiago Alves 1 month ago to the day. Story let Brenneman dictate this fight, and you can tell as the minutes wore on he was getting more and more frustrated. Brenneman wasn’t interested in standing up and trading with Story, and used the clinch and his wrestling to control Story on the mat. We know Story has some wrestling chops, and that is why some were amazed of his inability to get up or sweep. Brenneman fought a near perfect fight with a near perfect game plan.
Brenneman defeated Story via unanimous decision (29–28, 29–28, 29–28)

Welterweight bout:

John Howard vs. Matt Brown

Matt Brown was another fighter not a lot of people picked. Brown has been know in the past to take chances in the Octagon, and admittedly he says it has cost him. Brown was able to bully John Howard around for almost the whole 15 minutes, and the shocking part was Howard’s cardio. As Brown was grinding his way to a decision Howard became more and more exhausted, and half way through the fight he looked like he was ready to break.

Many thought thats what Howard was going to do Brown in this fight, and it didn’t go that way at all. Brown was able to land the cleaner strikes through out the whole fight, and when he clinched with Howard he found a way to get it to the ground. A loss certainly puts the future in question for Howard and I would not be surprised to see him cut after this loss.
Brown defeated Howard via unanimous decision (29–28, 29–28, 29–28)

Heavyweight bout:

Matt Mitrione vs. Christian Morecraft

Matt Mitrione looks more and more comfortable in the Octagon as he fights. You could tell how relaxed and focused he was from the even before the fight started. Mitrione’s striking is improving exponentially and its becoming more and more apparent that his wins are much more than a fluke. Mitrione is far from a complete fighter, but he is a gifted athlete who is able to push most fighters around.
Mitrione defeated Morecraft via KO (punches) at 4:28 of round 2
