UFC Live Sanchez Vs Kampmann took place last night in Louisville Kentucky in front of 9000 plus UFC fans. The event was headlined by Diego Sanchez and Martin Kampmann who fought to a decision, that earned them each 160k in bonus money, that many felt should have went to Kampmann. This was the first time the UFC broadcast an event in 3-D! Below is the break down on how everything shook out on the main card.

Main Card

Bantamweight bout:

Brian Bowles vs. Damacio Page

This was a rematch from a WEC fight that took place in 2008. The same thing happened the last time they fought. I don’t just mean the result! Page came out real aggressive, and was focused on smothering Bowles from the moment the ref started the fight. He was throwing exchanges, leg and high kicks, and everything he could come with. Bowles finally caught Page with an uppercut, and Page went down. Bowles immediately hopped into Page’s guard and began to work. Page scrambled to get up, and committed himself to a sing leg takedown. Bowles wrapped up Page’s neck and pulled him into guard, and forced Page to tap. The exact same time, and the exact same method as the last time.

Bowles defeated Page via technical submission (guillotine choke) at 3:30 of round 1

Middleweight bout:

Alessio Sakara vs. Chris Weidman

Sakara looked very calm and collected in the first round against Weidman. Chris was throwing wide looping punches, and mediocre combinations to get Alessio to come forward with punches. Sakara wasn’t biting though, and stayed on the outside while hopping in and out to throw combinations of his own. Sakara’s shots came in bunches, and almost always ended in cracking leg kick that echoed through out the YUM Center. Weidman was shooting in for takedowns, but he was telegraphing them, and just couldn’t get the fight to the ground. Sakara started to fade a little bit at the end, but it was his round for sure.

Early in the second round. Weidman finally got the fight to the floor, and you could immediately tell why Alessio was avoiding it so badly. Weidman worked into half guard, and started landing punches and elbows that really bloodied the face of up of Sakara. Sakara finally managed to scramble to his feet toward the end of the round, and the ref jumped in to have the cut looked at. Given the green light to continue, Weidman really presses the fight, but can’t seem to put away Sakara. Alessio lands a few body shots before the horn sounded. This round was definitely Weidman’s.

The third round was all Weidman again. It seemed as though he realized he couldn’t away Sakara, and just worked his wrestling and ground and pound through out the round. Sakara did manage to scramble to his feet a few times, and he showed a lot of heart, but every time ended the same way. With him eating punches off of his back.

Weidman defeated Sakara via unanimous decision (30–27, 30–27, 30–27)

Middleweight bout:

C.B. Dollaway vs. Mark Muñoz

There isn’t much to say about this fight. After exchanging some leg kicks, and counter punches. Muñoz uncorked a right hand that sent CB collapsing to the floor. Muñoz smelled the blood in the water, and went in for the finish. After a few hammer fists, CB appeared to have gone out, and the ref stopped the fight. Dollaway laid dazed on the mat for a moment or two, and then got up and seemed to complain about the finish. The crowd seemed to be on his side, but the replay clearly shows CB going limp in the exchange and a really “out of it” look in his eyes while he was getting put away. This was a good stop in my opinion.

Muñoz defeated Dollaway via TKO (punches) at 0:54 of round 1

Welterweight bout:

Diego Sanchez vs. Martin Kampman

Kampmann is clearly the bigger fighter in the cage, and he seemed to be much more calm and collected. Diego seemed to be coming forward the whole round, but he was paying for it. By halfway through the round, he was bleeding from his nose and his mouth, and was dropped once. Kampmann was keeping him on the outside, and when Diego went in for the takedowns he paid for them. Diego dove in for a knee and ate a huge knee and some hands, and pressed Martin up against the cage. Thats where the first round ended.

The second round was more of the same. Kampmann was clearly winning the striking exchanges, and when Diego wasn’t landing he would just dive in for a take down that he never finished. Diego kept diving for the takedowns, but he seemed to be wasting a lot of energy and risking a lot from the knees of Kampmann. By the middle of the round, the still bleeding Diego had landed a few shots of his own that appeared to sting Kampmann, but Kampmann was no where near in danger. Kampmann’s eye started to bleed a little bit toward the end of the round that ended with another missed takedown from Sanchez.

Diego is still coming forward in the third, and is still paying for it. He seemed to want to create a brawl with Kampmann, and in my opinion was losing most of the exchanges. Diego was landing a bit, but he was missing a lot too. Diego finally secured a takedown from Kampmann, but martin was right back up before Diego could really mount any sort of attack. Sanchez was bleeding profusely at this point. His mouth and nose were bleeding, he had a cut over his right eye, and a bad cut and contusion under his left. His whole face seemed to be bloodied, but still came forward to try to bait Kampmann into exchanges. At one point, Kampmann punched Diego, and appeared to shake out his hand. We learned later that he had broken hand at the of the fight. Diego showed a lot of heart in the fight, and although the judges disagree, I had Kampmann winning the first two rounds easily. I think this was a bad decision.

Sanchez defeated Kampmann via unanimous decision (29–28, 29–28, 29–28)
