UFC 129 Mail Bag
Added on May 02, 2011 by John Petit in
With some computers issues behind me, I have decided to do a super-mail bag. As always please send me any MMA question you have to my twitter feed at www.twitter.com/scream13 . If I don’t answer it on twitter its because I will probably use it for a mailbag. This one is obviously going to be geared around the huge success, and the fights, of UFC 129. Even if you know the results, go back and watch these bout as you won’t be disappointed. This was an epic event, and almost every fight was entertaining. I wasn’t sure how the UFC would handle the transition to a stadium, but it was a great moment for the promotion.
Do you think Randy Couture will retire for real? Do you think he would take the fight with Fedor?
Tough question. I have asked myself a few times now, and for a person who has seen every second of available footage on the legendary athlete that is Randy Couture, I really do think we just saw Randy’s last fight. No matter what happened in that fight, the career of Couture is living fairytale. Its a storybook ending fight fans, and I am absolutely honored to have had the opportunity to see Randy fight. We all should be! I plan on writing something big about this topic so stay tuned.
As for the Fedor fight, to me this was a fight I wanted a see 4-7 years ago. Randy hasn’t looked like Randy for a while, still an amazing fighter, but the speed and pace has slowed down. Submitting James Toney is one thing, but competing with the upper echelon is a different stratosphere. Lyoto Machida looked so much faster than Couture, and it was a matter of time before Machida landed something significant. Machida is hard to handle for wrestlers, and the only reason I would pick Jon Jones over him is because of the ten inch reach advantage he would have over Machida. Bones’ 84.5 inch reach is the longest in UFC history.
After the fourth round, during the Homincik vs Aldo fight, Do you think they should have stopped the fight?
Short answer no, but I understand why people would think that. However, unless you are a doctor I don’t really respect your opinion on it. I have been cage side to hundreds of fights, and I have seen TERRIBLE doctors. I mean doctors who were doing such a bad job that I went and told the commission they should be ashamed of themselves. What we saw was an expert in the field. We saw a person scan over every fighter in the background, and didn’t hesitate one second to jump in. That tennis ball Hominick had on his head was quite disturbing, and the entire time I was like I really hope that doesn’t pop. That was a great fight, and both fighters are 129 thousand dollars richer.
A reader also asked what my favorite fight was, and it was a toss up between this one and the Yves Jabouin vs. Pablo Garza that ended in the flying triangle by Garza. I am a huge BJJ fan, and that was textbook and beautiful to watch.
Will Kenny Florian get Jose’ Aldo next?
No word yet for certain, but as I understand it, his opponent will most likely be Chad Mendez. If Kenflo defeats Diego Nunes then he will get the winner of that fight. Again, this is unconfirmed but that is the way Dana White made it sound in his post fight interviews.
What did you think of Georges St Pierre’s performance against Jake Shields?
I am kind of torn on GSP right now, and to what his game plan was for the fight. From now on I am going to laugh at people who call him the number one fighter in the world. Pound for pound fighters don’t throw right hands that look they are throwing fastballs. Yes, Dan Henderson dropped Jake Shields with the right hand, but it didn’t win the fight. I just didn’t see the killer instinct I expect from GSP, and honestly from any champion. I get it, the stakes are high. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are at stake, and legacies are on the line. He won 4 rounds on my card, but he looked so confident on his feet. When I see someone tooling someone on the BJJ mat I know the player can submit the other whenever they wanted. I knew he won but GSP looked like he went through a meat grinder and went to the hospital, and Jake Shields went to the post fight presser and went to an after party.
