UFC 122

UFC 122 took place at König Pilsener Arena in Oberhausen, Germany in front of a near sell out crowd. The event is scheduled to air tonight on SpikeTV. The event capped off a solid week of good mixed martial arts, but all in all it was a lack luster card. This is how the televised card went down, and below you will find the bonuses and the quick results.

Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Goran Reljic

Although Reljic had some committed offense in the first round the whole fight went Soszynski’s way. Goran didn’t seem to have an answer for the power of Soszynski, and he really didn’t know how to do deal with getting pushed around like that. Goran was able to score a few take downs early in the fight, but Soszynski was able to get up with little or no damage. The first two rounds were rather quiet, and but Soszynski did enough to win them. Soszynski won via unanimous decision. He said after the fight, “That boy is tough,” said Soszynski, He’s one tough S.O.B. You never know what the judges are going to score. I thought I had him standing, but he took me down. I think I sealed it what that third round.”

Amir Sadollah vs. Peter Sobotta

This was a stand up battle for 15 minutes, and Amir put on a Muay Thai clinic. He displayed very comfortable punches, and excellent kicks that almost immediately took the spring out of Sobotta’s step. He pressured Peter from the beginning and punished Peter’s front leg. He went to work early on it, and it paid dividends in the third round. Sobotta was a game opponent, and was really letting his hands go at the end, but it was an easy decision in favor of Amir. Sadollah said after the fight “I kind of expected him to hang in there, He’s on his way up. I don’t have anything pithy to say. I’m just happy and want to say thank you to my coaches.”

Dennis Siver vs. Andre Winner

Andre and Denis wasted no time feeling each other out, and from the first few seconds both were swinging for the fences. It looked like Andre’s reach advantage was going to be a real problem for Siver, but with quick head movement he was able to avoid the heavy power shots from Winner. A few minutes a left hook send Winner to the seat of his pants, and Siver just swarmed. He started with hammer fists that cause winner to roll to his stomach, and Siver took his back trapping one of his arms with his hooks. This made it easy to sink in the rear naked choke. An impressive win for Siver in front of his home town, and the crowd went crazy for their home town boy. Siver said “It was my duty to win here,” Siver said through his translator. “It was the most important thing in my life. I’ve been training a lot of jiu-jitsu lately, and I wanted to try it out in the ring, whether it works or not.”

Jorge Rivera vs. Alessio Sakara

This fight was scratched while the undercard was taking place. Apparently Sakara became ill, and even though he wanted to try and go in and fight, the commission reps on hand concluded he was too sick to compete. I even heard reports that he was taking fluids intravenously, and when it didn’t work the doctor said he was a no go.

Nate Marquardt vs. Yushin Okami

This fight was a title contender match, and the winner would go to face the winner of the Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belftort fight. It really looked like both fighters didn’t want to do anything dumb, because the stakes were so high. The fight was anticlimactic in general, and there wasn’t many big strikes or brawling at all. Neither fighter wanted to take any risks. In Regards to Nate, he looked really flat footed, and it looked like he was having a real hard time pulling the trigger on Okami. He managed to land a few heavy shots later in the fight, but he was barely throwing any kicks and threw virtually no combinations. He managed a takedown in the second, but Okami was able to get up with relative ease.

Yushin Okami didn’t too much better, but he was coming forward the whole time on Nate. He found a home for his jab early in the fight, and was able to push Nate around a bit. He was able to take Nate down in the first and third, and although he controlled him a bit, he really didn’t manage much offense. He clearly won the fight, no question about that, but it was a lackluster performance by both fighters. Okami said after the fight “I didn’t take any damage, so I didn’t think much of the takedown from Nate, I’m glad I won the fight.”
