Shane Carwin released a statement this morning on his website announcing he will be pulling out of his UFC 125 fight with Shane “Big Country” Nelson. He did it not speak of how he injured his back, but apparently that is the main reason why he won’t be fighting. Carwin had MRI’s this past weekend, and he will be out at least 8-12 weeks. However, doctors are determining if he needs surgery, so it may be even longer before he gets back to training.

Shane announced from his site ( http://www.shane-carwin.com )“I am going to pull out of the fight with Roy Nelson. As many of you know I have been having some back pain. I had an MRI yesterday and I have some damage that may really require surgery. If the doctors do not have to perform surgery then I will be out 8-12 weeks. If they do have to perform surgery I do not know how long I will be out of action. I was really looking forward to fighting again and obviously this is a very disappointing turn of events.”

Shane went on to say “This type of thing is MMA. I know I am saying that a lot but it is the truth. We sacrifice our minds and bodies on our own time and our own dimes to prepare for battle. in hopes that we get the call for battle. In that process things can go wrong and if we don’t compete we don’t get paid. The time, money and sacrifices are lost and your opportunity might pass you by. Some fighters choose to fight injured as the risk is worth any part of the reward they may receive.”

Carwin is coming off his UFC 116 championship fight with Brock Lesnar, and agreed to the Roy Nelson fight months ago. Shane had Lesnar hurt early in the fight, and many felt the fight should have ended in the first with him as the winner. However, Lesnar came back in the second and submitted Carwin early in the second. Carwin blamed his lack of cardio, and even joked about it in his blog. “The good news is the doctors said I can work on my cardio (they must have seen my last fight lol) with this injury” he stated.

Some are speculating the replacement could be Frank Mir, but its obvious the UFC wants to give Roy Nelson some top competition. A few other names that have been coming up so far are Pat Berry who fought and last at UFC 115 to Mirko Crocop, Joey Beltran who fought at UFC 119, or possibly Brendan Schaub who fought at UFC 121 which would be a rematch of the The Ultimate Fighter heavyweight final. The UFC has not announced a replacement yet, but they will probably announce it soon. The Main Event at UFC 125 is going to be Edgar vs Maynard for the Lightweight championship, and it will also feature: Clay Guida vs. Takanori Gomi, Nate Diaz vs. Dong Hyun Kim, and Thiago Silva vs. Brandon Vera. This is the New Years Day card that the UFC really likes to stack the card, and even without Carwin Vs Nelson its shaping up to be a great card.
