Cole Miller Talks About Words With Cerrone
Added on Jan 18, 2011 by John Petit in
Cole Miller is set to fight his friend Matt Wiman at Saturday’s “UFC Fight Night 23: UFC Fights for the Troops 2″ event. If you have been paying attention, you may have heard the stories about Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone calling him out Miller while he was in camp.
Miller has always said that when he is a little angry, he thinks he fights better, and with a fight coming up against his friend, He said Cerrone’s timing is perfect. He told MMAJunkie his relationship with Wiman started on TUF 5. He said they aren’t best friends, but “He’s one of these guys where we don’t train together or anything like that, but we talk many times per year. He may call to ask about a fighter he’s getting ready for, and I may call just to say merry Christmas to him and his family.”
With all that being said, Cerrone seems to be adding the fuel Miller sometimes needs to fight better. He said “If anything, it offered me a little more motivation. I’ve been able to harness some focus. I fight better when I’m a little bit angry. That’s something for me to be angry about. It’s kind of hard for me to be angry about Matt Wiman. He’s a pretty classy guy, a stand-up dude, a good representative of the sport. But right now, I’m not looking past Matt Wiman. I’m focused on Matt Wiman. But if I get by him, I can get that fight I really want with ‘Cowboy.’”
So how did this all come about? When did this Cowboy beef start? Miller said it started one night at dinner. He said they were both talking about how they liked watching the other fight, and he asked who Cowboy wanted to fight? Miller said “He said, ‘I want to fight you!’ I didn’t like that, and we had some words. Every time we see each other now we have words. It doesn’t get close to brawling now because it’s kind of understood. But every time we see each other we pop off at the mouth a little bit.”
The last time they crossed paths was at the UFC Fan Expo event, and the UFC put them both in the same van, to drive them to the event. Cowboy was their with Leonard Garcia, and Cole was there with one of his brothers. Miller said it got tense, and concluded “It was like, ‘All right, let’s break this awkward silence by telling each other what we think of each other.”
