C.B. Dollaway vs. Mark Munoz
This fight will answer questions about both fighters, as they both sit just outside the top ten in the middleweight division. The wrestler vs wrestler match up can end up in an interesting grappling match or a takedown stalemate that will result in a 15 minute stand up war. If these were lower tiered fighters I would be concerned about this fight being exciting, but both these guys have a lot to prove at middleweight and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
Mark Munoz, an NCAA champion for Oklahoma State University at 197lbs, is starting to make a name for himself at 185 after a KO loss in his UFC debut. Munoz has shown he ability to control people on the ground, and light them up while doing so. His ground and pound is going to be a key for winning this fight. I think positionally Munoz will have the advantage on the ground, but I do feel CB’s submission skills are of a higher caliber. I also happen to think his standup is a little bit better then CB’s skills, but both have been evolving quickly. Munoz’s only loss at middleweight was to Okami, and it was a decision loss. He’s currently 4-2 in the UFC after his Decision win at UFC 123 over Aaron Simpson.
C.B. Dollaway, who is an Arizona State University All-American, is no stranger to the ground. CB is coming off of a submission win over Joe Doerksen at UFC 119. I think his stand up is as good as Munoz, but Mark has the advantage of power and hits harder than CB. CB is a good scrambler, and is slick with his transitions and submissions, and he is very capable of catching Munoz and getting the tap.
Munoz is hard to keep down, and his win over Simpson showed. Simpson is a good wrestler himself, and Munoz was able to outpoint him, and do enough to get the win. Munoz needs to recognize when he isn’t going to get a take down, he wasted a lot of energy on takedowns that didn’t happen against Okami, and I hope he realizes when to let up on them against Dollaway. Dollaway is capable of baiting people into subs when they are over committed on the take down. I think Munoz keeps this on the feet for a while, and wears downs CB a little bit, before he take him down. I don’t see Munoz finishes CB, but I think he will get the decision win.
Diego Sanchez vs. Martin Kampmann
After losing a Decision to John Hathaway at UFC 114 it really looked like the better days of Diego Sanchez were behind us, but he looked outstanding against Paulo Thiago when he won by a decision. Martin Kampmann is coming off of a loss, but its to number one contender Jake Shields.
Sanchez is going to look to smother Kampmann early, and Diego is good at that. He is a violent fighter, who is capable of going a full 15 minutes at a crazy pace, but this could play into Kampmann hands. Kampmann has a good kick boxing game, and has great transitional chokes. Diego is going to look to bully Kampmann, but Kampmann will have the size advantage.
I think at fight time Sanchez is going to want to make this a grapple-fest, especially after tasting a few of the punches from the Kampmann. I think Martin will use his size to wear down Sanchez, and win the later rounds of the fight. I think Kampmann will do enough in he fight to pick up the decision win.
