The broadcast card consisted of three fights, and featured the completion of two of the tournaments Bellator ran this season. Although the broadcasts were delayed till late at night for Fox Sport Net subscribers, the dedicated MMA fans who stayed up for the fights were treated to some good fights by the promotion.
Jim Wallhead Vs Ryan Thomas
Some people refer to Wallhead as one of the unluckiest fighters in MMA. He was schedule to fight in last seasons Bellator welter weight competition where many thought he could win the whole tournament. However, on April 20th, just two days before his fight to the USA, Wallhead was forced to withdraw from the Bellator tournament as he was grounded in England due to the 2010 volcano eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull. Wallhead was replaced by Ryan Thomas. His opponent in this match. Wallhead came out looking light on his feet, and was able to jump in and out while landing some decent combinations on Thomas. The second half of the round was all Ryan Thomas. Thomas was unpredictable, and had no problem changing levels with his strikes to the head and body of Judo Jim. As the round wore on, Jim was being forced to clinch in order to control Ryan enough to stop his momentum.
Round 2 and 3 were a different story. Although Ryan Thomas was coming foreward the entire time, it was Wallhead who was letting his hands go. Thomas was landing on Wallhead, but Jim was able to put his punches together, and really control the pace of the fight. Wallhead’s leg kick strategy paid dividends for him, and even dropped Thomas to a knee with a well placed one. Proving to be a game opponent, Ryan Thomas came forward to push Wallhead in the fight, and never gave up. Wallhead recieved the Judges decision 29-28 on all three cards.
Zach Makovsky vs. Ed West
In the fast paced conclusion of the Bantam Weight Tournament, this five round fight was all Zach Makovsky. Where ever the fight ended up, it was Makovsky who was in control, and he really pressed the action. Makovsky wanted this fight to take place on the floor, and when he got it there, Ed West never seemed to be able to change the momentum. Ed West was a game opponent, and was trying to get back into the fight all the way up till the final minute of the fifth round, but he had no answer for Zach’s wrestling and ground and pound.
Zack Makovsky def. Ed West by Unanimous Decision (50-45, 50-45, 49-46)
Cole Konrad vs. Neil Grove
Cole Konrad took a lot of flack prior to this fight for being a boring fighter, because he used his wrestling to grind out decision after decision. So it was ironic, that in the one fight everyone thought would go to the judges, it ended in an early submission. Both fighters stalked each other for the early part of the fight, and you can tell Cole had a nervous look on his face when he got Grove down, because Grove popped right back up. Neil was always looking to land that one hay maker that he was sure would put Konrad on his back. However, Cole got a hold of grove, and took him down in middle of the round. Konrad moved to side control, then to mount, where he applied the Key Lock submission. At first it didn’t look like Neil was going to tap, and possibly wiggle out of it, but once Konrad gained more leverage he had no choice.
Cole Konrad def. Neil Grove via key lock submission: Round 1 at 4:45
