Green Bay is the smallest metro area in the NFL, but the entire state of Wisconsin is getting in on the act of cheering the Packers to what would be their fourth Super Bowl title.  And it’s not just the fans of the Badger State that are supporting the Packers–even the state government is getting involved.  In a rare display of bipartisan cooperation, the dome of the Wisconsin state capitol will be lit in Packers’ green and gold in the week before the Super Bowl.

Republican Gov. Scott Walker agreed to a request by Green Bay Democratic Senator Dave Hansen  to light the Capitol dome green and gold next week in the run-up to the Super Bowl.  Of course nothing in politics is as simple as screwing in some colored bulbs and flipping a switch–the governor’s spokesman Cullen Werwie called the move a “a show of bipartisan support for the Packers” but it won’t be a done deal until Madison Democrat Sen. Fred Risser, who is chairman of the State Capitol and Executive Residents Board, approves it.  Assuming he wants to get re-elected, I’d expect Senator Risser to make this top priority.

In a letter to Governor Walker on Monday, Sen. Hansen noted:

“The Packers displayed great character in overcoming significant injuries and obstacles to earn their opportunity to play in the Super Bowl.”

The lights on the Capitol have changed color in the past for one reason or another–for example, they were recently tinted pink to raise awareness of breast cancer.

And while you won’t see politicians doing any Super Bowl betting at online sportsbooks, they often make wagers between themselves.  That was the case in last week’s NFC Championship Game where the loser– Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn- -has to volunteer at a Milwaukee food pantry wearing a Packers jersey.
