Adult film actresses aren’t the only celebrities ‘picking sides’–rappers are getting into the act including one of the biggest names in the genre.  Lil Wayne hasn’t been out of prison for long, having recently served an 8 month bit at Rikers Island on a weapons beef but he’s already weighing in on the Super Bowl.  Lil Wayne has publicly declared himself a Green Bay Packers supporter.  To demonstrate his allegiance to the ‘Green and Gold’, Lil Wayne has released a song of the same name in which he proudly declares “Green Bay is my team”.

On the surface, Lil Wayne being a ‘cheesehead’ may seem like a tough sell.  He’s originally from New Orleans and frequently spotted in New York.  He’s been seen at New Orleans Hornets games.  Despite the lack of connection to the area, however, Lil Wayne isn’t a ‘cheesehead come lately’.  He did a blog for ESPN back in 2008 where he mentioned an eclectic list of favorite teams including the Green Bay Packers, the Boston Bruins, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Red Sox.

The timing for the release of the song, however, is likely publicity.  And for rappers there’s no better source of publicity than a good old fashioned rap feud.  Rap feuds aren’t quite as violent as they used to be, when they would occasionally result in a body count.  Now they’re more frequently used to generate ‘buzz’ for the parties involved.  Lil Wayne’s song is a direct response to Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa’s song ‘Black and Gold’.

Don’t expect any profound Superbowl betting insights from Little Wayne’s song–here’s a sample lyric:

“Got a call from my homie this just in, the Packers are in the Super Bowl and they better win.”

and

“This is Packer country, where your green card?”

and

“This ain’t a diss song, I just love my team. That’s the team with the big G’s on the helmets”

Definitely won’t make anyone forget the 1985 Chicago Bears’ classic “The Super Bowl Shuffle”.
