In another sign that the NFL is gingerly trying to bring back Super Bowl entertainment that appeals to adults the league has tapped singer Christina Aguilera to perform the National Anthem at this year’s game.  Super Bowl XLV will be held at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Sunday, February 6.  Aguliera’s performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” will  take place a few minutes before the game’s 3:25 PM Pacific kickoff.

The 30 year old Aguilera was part of the 2000 Super Bowl halftime show along with  Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias and former Genesis drummer Phil Collins.  At one point Aguilera was known for not wearing much clothing, but obviously few are concerned about any sort of ‘wardrobe malfunction’ during the National Anthem.

Aguilera has recently starred in the movie “Burlesque” with the Brett Favre of showbiz, Cher.  Most of the reviews of the film have ranged from middling to poor, though it appears to be receiving a warmer reception internationally–one newspaper in South Africa called Aguilera’s performance ‘dazzling’.  Here in the US, however, it’s not exactly getting critical acclaim–in fact, “Burlesque” received the most nominations at this year’s “Razzie” awards which annually…uh…”reward”…the worst movies and performances of the year.  Aguilera is in the running for “Worst Actress” for her performance in the film:

Leading the pack is Christina Aguilera’s Burlesque with five nods. It is up for worst director, worst screenplay worst supporting actor for Cam Gigandet, worst supporting actress for both Cher and Kristen Bell and worst actress for Christina Aguilera. Burlesque has not been nominated for worst picture.

It may be small consolation to Aguilera, but in a poll conducted on the Razzies official website only 3.16% of the respondents felt her performance was the worst of the year.  That was the third most of any listed actress, but well behind Miley Cyrus in “Last Song” (43%) and Kristen Stewart in “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” (40.9%).

Here’s the “Burlesque” trailer:
