Arlington, Texas Mayor Mad That Dallas Is Getting All The Super Bowl Publicity

While the team’s name may be the *Dallas* Cowboys, any NFL fan worth his salt can tell you that they don’t actually play in Dallas–instead, they play in nearby Arlington, Texas as do the Texas Rangers baseball team. Despite this bit of geographic trivia, if you asked the average sports betting enthusiast on the street where the Super Bowl was being played this season there’s a good chance he’d say “Dallas”. And this is really pissing off the Mayor of Arlington, Texas Robert Cluck.
And it’s not just fans–Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy observed after his team’s win in the NFC Championship game:
“We’re thankful we’re going to Dallas. We had a little bit of everything that’s for sure. But just a great win all together and we’re looking forward to going to Dallas.”
Mayor Cluck is getting tired of it, to the point that stories about his take on the Dallas/Arlington distinction have started appearing in the local media:
“Does it make me angry? No. It’s just something we have to overcome. I’m frustrated. Sure. That’s the word.”
Cowboys’ great wide receiver Drew Pearson even weighed in on the ‘controversy’:
“It’s a big deal for the city of Arlington. Arlington is a growing community. And they’ve done some things and taken tremendous initiatives. Including when the city of Dallas dropped the ball, they were right there to catch that ball and bring Cowboys Stadium to their city.”
Even former Cowboys QB Troy Aikman came correct–he’s now a Fox Sports announcer and observed the following:
“And off they go to Arlington, Texas for Super Bowl 45.”
We’re usually concerned with more important things like NFL betting lines and what not but we have a hard time sympathizing with the mayor. Arlington may be a very fine community, but it wouldn’t be anything if Dallas were to disappear tomorrow. In any case, we’ll try to get it right in our Super Bowl coverage and in the meantime we suggest that Mayor Cluck find more constructive uses for his time and energy.
