Liverpool’s Gerrard to Miss Four Weeks
Added on Nov 18, 2010 by Trent Sillanpaa in
Struggling Liverpool face a huge roadblock in its return to the top half of the Premier League table now that it has been announced star Steven Gerrard will me as much as four weeks with a hamstring injury suffered in England’s 2-1 friendly loss to France on Wednesday.
Gerrard pulled up lame in the second half at Wembley while serving national team duty, which is sure to add fuel to the fire in the battle between clubs and countries for the services of top players. Newcastle United’s Andy Carroll earned his first England cap against France despite protests from his club that the young striker was not fit to play.
Liverpool’s trying season cannot possibly be helped by the absence of its talisman. Toiling in 11th place, the Reds remain well outside of the top four and three points out of the top seven. Following three consecutive Premier League victories, including a comprehensive 2-0 defeat of Chelsea, Liverpool secured just one point from matches at Wigan Athletic and Stoke City last week.
Following a battery of tests on Thursday it was determined that Gerrard has a grade two tear of his hamstring. The injury is one which the head of sports science at Liverpool, Dr. Peter Brukner, qualifies as significant.
Gerrard’s absence will put the onus on Fernando Torres and Joe Cole to key the Liverpool attack. Torres has struggled to find his form, but seemed to have a breakout performance with two superb goals versus Chelsea. Cole has severely underperformed despite being given a wonderful opportunity at regular time on the pitch at Anfield.
If the face of Liverpool football does in fact miss four weeks he will watch the Reds face West Ham, Tottenham, Aston Villa, and Newcastle in Premier League play. Liverpool could also be without Gerrard for Europa League matches against Steaua Bucuresti and FC Utrecht, though the Reds lead their group and are likely to progress.
