The Chicago Blackhawks started their home opener this weekend with a banner presentation 49 years in the making. Although the game would be spoiled by a Detroit Redwings victory, the 30 minute presentation will be on the minds of Blackhawks fans for years to come.

After some introductions, Jonathon Toewes skated onto the ice with the Stanley Cup, and placed it at center ice. At center ice stood Blackhawks from the 1961 Stanley Cup team: Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, Pierre Pilote, Eric Nesterenko, and Ab McDonald. Members of the 2010 Championship team skated around the ice with the new banners, and they were then raised up to the rafters. They were then unfurled by the 61′ greats, and  it will remain there for the history of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Three banners in total were raised that night. The Central Division champions, Western Conference champions and Stanley Cup champions were all raised in front of the capacity crowd. Hawks defenseman Duncan Keith said of the experience “It has been a long time since we were able to raise a banner here in Chicago for a Stanley Cup. That in itself is pretty special.”
