Dustin Brown and the LA Kings were too much for the red hot Colorado Avalanche, and it was Jonathon Quick who held the Avs scoreless for the 5-0 win. The Kings knocked off the high-scoring Colorado Avalanche at the Pepsi Center to complete a five-game road trip with a 3-2-0 record and end the Avalanche’s winning streak at six games. Brown said they felt unstoppable, and that this was their A-game. “That’s been our best 60 minutes, especially on the defensive side of the puck,” said Brown who had 2 goals and 2 assists on the night. Brown also felt the offense was there tonight as well, he said “My line in particular, I felt we were in the offensive zone a lot and controlled the play. When that happens, you’re going to get chances. It was a pretty good complete game for us.”
Quick turned away 51 shots against Detroit the other night in his second shutout of the season, but only needed to stop 23 to earn him his third shutout this season, and the 11th in his career. Brown said of Quick, “He had to make probably two really difficult saves, and he made them. I thought this was our best defensive effort in some time.”
Colorado have been on fire lately. They totaled 27 goals in its winning streak, 40 goals while going 7-0-1 in the previous eight home games and hadn’t been blanked since a 3-0 loss in Los Angeles on Feb. 13 last season. Quick was happy with his play against such a solid team, he said “It’s a great team over there. They’ve got a lot of offensive talent,. It’s great to get the goals support and to play as great defensively as we did. At times they created some pressure and they were working it down low a little bit, but we still managed to keep the scoring chances to a minimum.” Quick also took a second to recognize Brown and said “He’s working hard all game. He’s been playing well all season. It’s good to see him get rewarded like that.”
The Kings even found a rare way to score last night when Rob Scuderi got involved. It was his first goal in 185 games since he scored Oct. 4, 2008, against Ottawa while playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins. It was his fourth goal in 405 career NHL games. Scuderi said after the game, “I had some patience with the puck there. Maybe it was the thin air messing up my brain, but I’ll take it.”
Avalanche center Ryan O’Reilly said he didn’t feel the team clicking on the ice, and really felt that the Kings just put together a great game. He added “They played tough the entire game and we just weren’t on our game tonight. We have to get back to the things we do well. They are an aggressive team. We have to rebound and play smart and put this behind us.”
The LA Kings (19-12-1,49pts), who are 4th in Pacific Division, will face the Edmonton Oilers(12-15-5, 29pts) on Thursday. The Colorado Avalanche (19-11-4,43pts), who are now 1st in Northwest Division, will face the Minnesota Wild(15-13-4, 34pts) on Thursday.
