NHL Betting Picks: Detroit @ Nashville
Added on Mar 29, 2010 by Jack Thurman in
Sportsbooks have a big NHL betting card for Saturday, and we’ll take a look at a Western Conference online betting matchup between the Detroit Red Wings and Nashville Predators. Wings had been playing very mediocre hockey for most of the season, but have really turned it on of late and have a good grasp on a playoff spot. Nashville has been quietly consistent all season and hold down the 5th spot in the West.

Yesterday’s play against the Red Wings didn’t work out, but the fundamental premise is still sound–with all due respect to the solid hockey Detroit is playing right now they’re perpetually overvalued by the betting public and, in turn, the linesmaker. They’re like Duke in college hoops or Notre Dame in college football–a classic ‘public’ team that is almost always priced higher than they should be based on their popularity alone. Last night the Wings were a whopping -320 favorite over a reasonably talented Minnesota team. Tonight, they’re a near pick’em choice against a very good Nashville team that has won 8 of their L10 games, as has the Red Wings.
Pekka Rinne will get the start in net against Detroit and he’s been outstanding of late, allowing just 13 goals in his last 8 starts for a 1.62 goals against average during that stretch. He’s won 7 of those starts with three shutouts. Wings are a capable road team, but despite their recent surge that doesn’t justify the price on Nashville’s home ice with the Preds matching Detroit victory for victory in the past 10 games.
