Sportsbooks serving up a short slate of NHL betting opportunities for Monday, but we’ll take a look at an Eastern Conference battle between the Carolina Hurricanes and Atlanta Thrashers.  Both teams are out of the playoff picture at the moment, but Atlanta just two points back of 8th place Boston.  Carolina had been the hottest team in hockey since the All Star break but they’re starting to fade.

Hard to figure these teams out–both have been in a scoring slump lately, with Carolina’s the most recent and most acute.  Atlanta not really scoring much either, but they’re starting to play better defense.  This is a quick rematch game from Saturday, when the Thrashers thumped the ‘canes in Raleigh by a 4-0 score.  It was actually the second time the teams have played in the month of March, with the previous meeting a 4-0 Carolina win at Atlanta.  Before that, the teams had played Over in 4 straight and 5 of the last 7.

Have to think that things will return to form here.  Neither team is good defensively–Atlanta tied for 25th and Carolina 26th in scoring defense.  Both teams can score, and in head to head play they’ve typically played wide open, high scoring hockey.  7 of the last 9 meetings in Atlanta have gone Over.  Before the teams traded shutouts the previous three meetings had averaged 8.3 goals per game.  We’ll look for both teams to score some goals against their opponent’s porous defenses and for this game to go Over the total.
