Garson

One would think that the Atlanta Thrashers’ forwards have nightmares the night before they have to face Mathieu Garon. Not only did Garon shut them out on Thursday night, but he improved to 5-0 against them. The twist of the knife is when you see that he is 4-0 against them at Philips Arena, and 3 of those are shut outs.

Garon is on fire these days as this was part 2 of a back to back shut outs. Garon goose egged Montreal the other night as well. The only somewhat good news for the Thrashers is that no one saw it. Only 8700 people showed up for Thursdays game. This was the lowest attendance in Thrashers history. On second thought, thats probably not that good.

Garon stopped 25 shots in the 3-0 win in the road game. “I don’t know what it is about this building,” Garon said, “There’s always teams that for some reason, I’m not saying it’s easier, you have more wins against.” He also said that he was a little lucky, but I think that he is selling himself short. He entered the game with a 1.5 goals against average, and that puts him in second in the NHL. We didn’t give them many chances,” Garon said. “Our guys were blocking shots.” Thats a good point, as he never faced more then 9 shots period in the game.

Blue Jackets Coach Scot Arniel was quick to agree. He said “Garon made some shots but wasn’t overly worked. We did a great job in front of him eliminating any quality chances and there weren’t many penalties, That allowed us to roll four lines and six defensemen.”
Derick Brassard was able to score again at the beginning of the second frame, and that means he has scored five times in his last six games. Brassard, who had only nine goals in 79 games last season, also had an assist when Marc Methot scored midway through the third period for a 2-0 lead. R.J. Umberger added an empty-netter at the end of third. “We didn’t start the season together, but things are going really well for us now,” Brassard said. “My game is going way better, The last four or five games, I’ve been trying to shoot more.”

Thrashers goalie Pavelec was able to stop 39 shots, but that wasn’t enough to win the game. The Thrashers began the night second in the league with 40 goals before being shut out for the first time this season. This was the second time they played in two days so fatigue could have been an issue. “We looked tired,” Thrashers coach Craig Ramsay said.” Individually, we’re not winning enough battles. As a team you have to win battles, but it’s up to each individual to start the process. We have to have everybody involved in scoring goals.”
