If you asked the Flyers after the game, they were just playing for this win, and not the fact they haven’t won in Detroit in 22 years. James van Riemsdyk, Daniel Carcillo and Scott Hartnell scored to help Philadelphia win for the first time in Detroit in more than 22 years, 3-2 over the Red Wings on Sunday. Since November of 1988 the Flyers have gone 0-14-2, but Goalie Brian Boucher told the media thats not what the win was about. He said “I don’t think it was in our mind to get the win for that reason. We haven’t been playing well the last four games and we wanted to get a big win.” Boucher had 25 saves on the night.
Flyers Coach Peter Laviolette said he didn’t even bother mentioning the streak to the team, as this was a different squad, and there is no sense in dwelling on it. “Not one word. I don’t believe in that stuff.” he said. “Different players here, everything. Doesn’t make sense bringing it up because you can’t do anything about it.”
Valtteri Filppula and Henrik Zetterberg scored for Detroit, which lost its second consecutive game.Jimmy Howard stopped 24 shots before being pulled in favor of Chris Osgood to start the third period. Osgood made five saves. Zetterberg said he didn’t think the offense was clicking, and they weren’t supporting each other on the ice. He said “I think it was the overall game. Passing game wasn’t working. We were one and done all the time. We weren’t playing together as a five-man unit and they really benefited. It was a lot of whistles and a lot of breaks and it was tough to get anything going.” Henrik stretched his point streak to 7 games.
Red Wings Coach Mike Babcock felt the same way, and thought they were out played for most of the game. He said “I just thought they were better than us basically for 40 minutes of the game. We started fine but I thought they were better. We were able to crank her up to another level in the third, for whatever reason.”
The Detroit Red Wings (24-10-5,53pts), who are now 1st in Central Division, will play the Edmonton Oilers(12-18-7, 31pts) on Tuesday in Edmonton. The Philidelphia Flyers (24-10-5, 53pts), who are now 1st in the Atlantic Division, will face the New Jersey Devils(10-26-2, 22pts) on Thursday in New Jersey.
