Leighton On Waivers
Goaltender Michael Leighton was put on waivers on Tuesday, and i now a member of the Flyers AHL squad. The 29 year old was a key player in the Flyers run to the Stanley Cup series, and even though they fell short of the coveted trophy, it was an impressive run. Philadelphia’s General manager Paul Holmgren said he scoured the NHL looking for a way to trade Leighton, but in the end he found no takers for the playoff tested goalie.
Leighton will suit up for the Adirondack Phantoms, and the Flyers will use Brian Boucher and Sergei Bobrovsky as their main goaltenders. The Flyers, tied for first place in the Atlantic Division with Pittsburgh, will take on the New Jersey Devils in Newark on Thursday.
Getzlaf Could Be Back In 6 Weeks
Anaheim Duck’s forward Ryan Getzlaf went to have his “nasal sinus fractures” out to see how the progress was coming along, and to get a better look at the initial damage. The injury took place on December 28 in a game against Phoenix, and the good news for the Ducks is that it will NOT require surgery. A surgery could have kept him out for almost 12 weeks. Now that he will not need further work done on it, the recovery time is looking to be about 6 weeks, but may be done in four.
The Ducks will miss Getzlaf, as he already has 37 points n the 40 games he has played this season.
Stamkos’ Blooper Penalty Shot
Tampa Bay had a rough first period against the the penguins on Wednesday night. After the penguins Scored in the first 7 seconds of the game, they went on to put two more past new goalie Dwayne Roloson. The Lightening then replaced him with Dan Ellis who proceeded to allow 2 more before the first 20 minutes was up.
As if things couldn’t get any worse, after the Steve Stamkos was awarded a penalty shot against the Pittsburgh-things got strange. Stamkos was skating in and taking a wide approach, probably to try a spin move, when he lost his edge and through his hat in the ring for blooper of the year. Its a tough pill swallow when your in the middle of being taken behind the woodshed while on the road. See the video here:
