Will Vincent Jackson Be A Patriot?

The exodus of Randy Moss has left a large void in the Patriots passing game. A void that could be filled by Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson, according to Comcast SportsNet New England. Sounds plausible since V-Jax has no apparent interest in returning to San Diego, and San Diego has no apparent interest in bringing him back. Could this have been all part of puppetmaster Bill Belichick’s grand plan? Or is it merely wishful thinking by some finger-crossing Pats backers? Let’s discuss.

The Comcast report suggests Patriots holdout guard Logan Mankins could be swapped for Jackson, which would rid both teams of disgruntled players. In addition, Belichick has compiled a bevy of 2011 draft picks to sweeten the pot, if necessary. However, the fact that Jackson will have to sit out an additional three games if he’s dealt could pose a problem. Plus, neither guy has inked a contract, so in order to trigger a trade, each would have to sign the dotted line first.

Another fly in the ointment is the Chargers steep asking price for Vinny. Rumor has it the organization is demanding at least second- and third-round picks, and possibly more. Considering the Pats acquired Moss for only a fourth-rounder in 2007, I seriously doubt Belichick would dole out multiple selections for a receiver who has never eclipsed 1200 yards or scored double-digit touchdowns in his career.

Although this trade scenario makes perfect sense, it seems like a longshot when all the variables are taken into account. If the Patriots weren’t willing to pony up the cash to resign Moss, it’s unlikely they would give up a player and/or draft picks for Jackson, then pay him the same hefty contract they weren’t willing to award Moss.

Jackson might be six years younger, but he’s nowhere near as talented as Moss. And lest we forget, Belichick refused to budge on Deion Branch’s outlandish salary demands in 2006 and subsequently shipped him to Seattle for a first-round pick. Anything’s possible in today’s NFL, but the Patriots have their own way of doing things. Dealing for Vincent Jackson would be slightly out of character.
