Randy Moss is looking to return to the NFL in 2012 but one thing for certain it won’t be with the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings have made clear in no uncertain terms that they’re taking a pass on their one time superstar wide receiver. Moss sat out last season but at age 35 has decided there’s still some life in his career.

Moss is very popular among Minnesota fans but didn’t exactly endear himself to management during his last stint with the team which lasted less than a month. Vikings’ GM Rick Spielman was diplomatic in his dismissal of Moss:

“Randy was a great player but again our focus is more on trying to get a young team.”

Moss’ agent, Joel Segal, suggests that his client is still very much in demand:

“We’ve had head coaches call. We’ve had GMs call.”

The Vikings’ lack of interest is something of a slap in the face for Moss since Spielman has stressed the importance of surrounding quarterback Christian Ponder with playmaking wide receivers:

“To give Christian the best chance at success is to get him around as many playmakers as we can on offense.”

Spielman is hoping to add some talent from the college ranks but if the right players are on the market the Vikes are willing to take the rubber band off the bankroll:

“Whether we make a big splash or not, if there’s someone out there we think can help us then we’re willing to spend a lot of money. We’ll definitely look at those options.”

To be fair, Moss isn’t the only veteran player the Vikings are taking a poss on–they’re likely to cut a number of veterans currently under contract with the team. This is a move necessitated by the realities of business in the NFL according to Spielman:

“Sometimes, when you move on from guys, it has nothing to do with their character and what they brought to the team. Sometimes, you just have to make some tough business decisions.”

Moss does have one offer on the table–from the IFL Chicago Slaughter who are coached by Steve McMichael aka the defensive tackle on the great Ditka era Bears teams:

“Seeing the splash that T.O. made going to the Allen, Texas, team, it would be a coup for us to get Randy.”

It’s doubtful that Moss is anxious to resume his career in the latest incarnation of Arena Football.
