#1 New York Jets

Last season the New York Jets had a breakout season as they were able to completely change their mindset and game plan with new defensive minded head coach Rex Ryan calling the shots.

The Jets are still uncertain about whether or not their best defensive player Darrelle Revis will play a single down this season, but even if the team has to move on without him, they will still be arguably the best defensive team in the league and a huge advantage for fantasy football owners.

#2 Minnesota Vikings

Even though Brett Favre dominated the headlines for the Vikings last season after having a career year, the Minnesota defense was a huge part of their success as Jared Allen and company seemed to dominate the competition on a weekly basis.

The competition in the NFC Conference will be tougher this season, but the Minnesota Vikings defense will be up to the task as they will without doubt be one of the top defenses in the league.

#3 Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys were finally able to get that elusive playoff win last season by dominating the Philadelphia Eagles, but even though the Cowboys are known for their offense, their defense was the main reason for their dominance over their division rivals.

This season the Cowboys will be a force on the defensive side of the football once again and arguably the best option if the Vikings and Jets are already taken in your fantasy draft.

#4 Green Bay Packers

Last season the Green Bay Packers had arguably one of the best defensive player in the league in cornerback Charles Woodson. Even though some potent offenses like the Arizona Cardinals lit up the Packers defense, they were still amongst the best in the NFL and will only get better this season.

#5 Baltimore Ravens

With linebacker Ray Lewis and safety Ed Reed staring down opposing quarterbacks, the Baltimore Ravens are always a threat on the defensive side of the football, but with their two best players on defense not getting any younger, the Ravens have dropped a bit in the fantasy defense rankings.

Even though they may not be considered amongst the elite with the New York Jets and the Minnesota Vikings, they can still put up some big fantasy numbers from time to time.

Honorable Mentions: Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, Tennessee Titans, New York Giants
