Suggs Rips Ravens Offensive Game Plan

The disgusting offensive display perpetrated by the Baltimore Ravens during Monday night’s 12-7 loss to Jacksonville didn’t just rub fans of quality football the wrong way. Apparently Ravens defensive players, most notably Terrell Suggs, were none too pleased with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron’s playcalling, which netted a pathetic 146 yards.
In his postgame comments, Suggs was critical of the decision to give stud running back Ray Rice only eight carries while Maurice Jones-Drew received 30 carries.
“I don’t really know what the game plan was,” Suggs said. “But when I have a Pro Bowl running back and I see he’s not getting his touches, I’m going to feel a certain way about it. He’s a good guy, he wants the ball, and I think we should feed him. Ray Rice, he’s a phenomenal player, and you’ve got to use your phenomenal players.”
The media will of course blow Suggs’ criticism way out of proportion in an attempt to paint him as the villain, but everything he said is completely accurate. For an offense that entered the game averaging 375 yards and 29.6 points, it’s beyond puzzling why Rice wasn’t more involved and why no adjustments were made to counter the Jaguars defense.
The offensive line was atrocious, failing to open running lanes and slow an aggressive pass rush. Wide receivers couldn’t beat one-on-one coverage. Quarterback Joe Flacco responded poorly to pressure and missed open receivers. In spotlight games when things aren’t going well, quarterbacks must be difference makers. Flacco, who has flopped in the past, once again came up small.
Suggs and the rest of the defense has every right to complain after holding the Jaguars offense to 205 total yards, zero touchdowns and 2/16 third-down conversions. It took three 50-yard field goals for Jacksonville to win. All the offense had to do was score 14 points.
The Jaguars defense is extremely underrated and does deserve praise for executing a relentless attack for four quarters. That being said, if the Ravens have Super Bowl aspirations, they cal ill afford to lose to lesser teams.
