Sportsbooks Post NFL Super Bowl Futures Odds

The ongoing NFL labor situation has left the 2011 season up in the air, but that hasn’t stopped Las Vegas sportsbooks from posting futures odds on the Super Bowl Champion along with the AFC and NFL conference champions. The MGM Grand Sportsbook is always one of the first in town to post these lines and they’ve already seen some significant movement due to betting action.
The MGM opened the Pittsburgh Steelers a 5/1 choice to claim the Superbowl crown followed by the New England Patriots at 7/1 and the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers at 8/1. Betting action has changed that hierarchy dramatically–the Green Bay Packers are now the favorites at 4/1 followed by the Patriots at 9/2 and the New York Jets at 6/1. The Indianapolis Colts opened at 20/1 and the San Diego Chargers at 25/1, but both teams are now 8/1.
Similar movement has occurred in the AFC and NFL championship odds. In the AFC, the Pittsburgh Steelers opened as 12/5 favorites followed by the New England Patriots (3/1). Next up was the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens at 9/2. The Patriots are now favored to win the AFC at 2/1 followed by the New York Jets at 3/1. The Chargers and Colts are also receiving bettors’ support to win the conference–Indianapolis opened at 8/1 and San Diego 12/1 but both teams are now priced at 7/2. The Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers are 5/1 to win the AFC.
In the NFC, the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers were opened as co-favorites at 17/5 followed by the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints at 11/2. The Packers have been bet down to 2/1 and are now the NFC championship favorite followed by the Philadelphia Eagles who have been bet down from 7/1 to 9/2. The Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Chicago Bears are all priced at 5/1. The Giants and Bears opened at 10/1. The Falcons and Saints are 6/1 choices to win the NFC and there’s been an impressive show of support for the Detroit Lions. The Lions opened as a 30/1 pick to win the conference but have been bet down to 8/1.
It’s important to remember that futures betting lines vary widely from one sportsbook to another and may often reflect a strong presence of a certain geographical bias in their clientele.
