Seahawks Sign Braylon Edwards

Seattle’s search for stability at the wide receiver position has taken a strange turn. Days after signing Antonio Bryant, who hasn’t played in the NFL since 2009, the Hawks front office added another declining player. Braylon Edwards is expected to ink a one-year deal today and will compete to fill the spot vacated by Mike Williams following his release two weeks ago.
Edwards spent 2011 with the Niners, but missed seven games due to a nagging knee injury. He finished the season with a career worst 15 receptions for 181 yards and zero touchdowns. He joins his fourth team in nine years after being selected number three overall in the 2005 draft by Cleveland.
Bray-Bray appeared to be on his way to superstardom following his breakout season in 2007. He earned All-Pro honors with 80 catches for 1289 yards and a league high 16 touchdowns. However, attitude issues and injuries derailed his train to glory and two years later he was shipped to the Jets.
He rebounded slightly in 2010 when he posted 53 grabs for 904 yards and seven scores in the Jets run-first offensive attack. But the team elected to not resign him and instead replaced him with a fresh out of the jail Plaxico Burress in the summer of 2011.
Bottom line: Edwards has only one 1000-yard season and his touchdowns from 2008-2011 (14) don’t equal his total from 2007. On the bright side, Seattle has a dearth of talent at wide receiver. Sidney Rice is a one-season wonder thus far, and the likes of Golden Tate and Ben Obomanu aren’t exactly starting material. Doug Baldwin showed flashes as a rookie, but he fits the mold of a possession receiver not a playmaker.
As for Antonio Bryant, he was deemed out of shape at a workout in June, but head coach Pete Carroll had a change of heart last week when he signed the ex-Buc, Niner, Brown and Cowboy. Seattle is also desperate for answers at quarterback, so their training camp should be one of the more interesting ones to monitor.
