Romo On Track To Start Versus Giants

Although Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was limited in today’s practice, the fact that he was able to throw passes with his bruised right hand is a good sign he’ll be able to start Sunday’s win or go home NFC East clash against the Giants. Romo banged the hand on defensive end Jason Babin’s helmet in last week’s loss to the Eagles. He sat out the remainder of the game, but it was viewed as precautionary.
Head coach Jason Garrett was careful not to declare Romo 100%, electing to take a wait and see approach.
“It’s still early, we hope that he progresses.” He has progressed since the game… I don’t want to get into too many specifics,” Garrett said when asked what Romo did the rest of the practice. “I thought he had a good day. … He seemed fairly functional.”
Considering the gravity of the game, it seems unlikely Romo won’t be under center. The victor will capture the NFC East crown and advance to the playoffs. The loser will be left to wonder ‘what if’ as they pack their bags for the offseason. Backup Stephen McGee also took snaps during practice and will be prepped in case he’s needed on Sunday night.
Needless to say, the entire NFC East division has been a disappointment in 2011. The preseason champion Eagles faltered early and never fully recovered due to turnovers, awful defense, injuries and just inept play in general. The Redskins were 3-1, but have mustered only two wins since.
Both the Cowboys and Giants suffered through late season collapses and thus find themselves in what amounts to a play-in game. Big Blue stole the first meeting on December 11 by overcoming a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Romo and Eli Manning combined to toss for 721 yards and six touchdowns in a 37-34 shootout.
With both defenses struggling to stop opponents, it’s safe to assume another high-scoring affair is in order. The home Giants are listed as 3-point favorites.
