Robert Griffin III Declines Colts Workout

It appears Heisman Trophy-winner Robert Griffin III is letting his Combine and Pro Day performances speak for themselves. The would-be number two overall pick in the upcoming draft turned down a request from the Colts for a private workout and reportedly has no intention of working out for any teams. Of course it’s widely assumed that RG III will be selected second by the Redskins after Indy grabs Andrew Luck with the first pick.
The request for a private workout might lead some pundits to believe the Colts aren’t sold on selecting Luck, but this whole mini soap opera is likely much ado about nothing. According to owner Kim Irsay, the team is just making sure to leave no stone unturned.
“A Luck private workout 2day..we want 2b as thorough n disciplined n process of #1 pick..we wanted 2do private with RG3,but his agent said no,” Irsay wrote on Twitter.”
It’s a forgone conclusion Luck will be a Colt in a few short weeks. Griffin and his agent know this and so does anyone with the slightest football knowledge. Irsay could be covering all his bases or he could be playing a little game of subterfuge, even though few are buying into it.
Neither Luck or RG III is a sure-thing, but the former seems to be the safer option. He’s a pure pocket-passer with skills ideally suited for a pro style offense. Griffin is the superior athlete of the two but he lacks the same polish. To be fair, Cam Newton faced similar criticism a year ago and he turned out a-okay.
Regardless of what the draft experts and player personnel gurus spout, identifying a can’t-miss quarterback prospect is no easy task. For every Peyton Manning there is a Ryan Leaf. For every Ben Roethlisberger there is a JaMarcus Russell.
Both Luck and Griffin could become superstars, or they both could flop, or one could flop while the other succeeds. Nobody knows for certain.
