Rex Grossman Making Bold Predictions

Redskins quarterback Rex Grossman still hasn’t officially been named the starter, but that hasn’t stopped him from proclaiming bold predictions about the upcoming season. According to Rexy, who actually looked decent after unseating Donovan McNabb a season ago, he believes the ‘Skins are poised to win the NFC East, something they haven’t done since 1999.
Grossman referred to his team as “sleepers” now, but is confident they will climb the mountain top when the smoke has cleared in 2011.
“Nobody’s talking about us. That’s right where we want to be. You look at us from top to bottom out here, there’s a bunch of great players. And we don’t need people saying we’re the best right now, but when it’s all said and done, I really feel like this team’s gonna win the East.”
Stranger things have happened in the NFL, like Grossman leading the Bears to the Super Bowl in 2006, but knocking off the Eagles, Cowboys and Giants with a roster thin on talent seems like a long shot.
The Eagles have an explosive offense led by Michael Vick and upgraded their floundering defense by adding Nnamdi Asomugha, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Cullen Jenkins. Dallas gets Tony Romo back from injury and hired Rob Ryan to run the defense. The Giants feature a potent offense with Super Bowl-winning Eli Manning under center.
What have the Redskins done? They wisely dumped McNabb, Albert Haynesworth and Clinton Portis, then traded for quarterback John Beck and running back Tim Hightower, and signed former Giant defensive tackle Barry Cofield.
Beck has thrown one touchdown pass and three interceptions since entering the league in 2007. Hightower has never received more than 153 carries in a season. Cofield has 10.5 career sacks in five years. Not exactly earth-shattering moves, but Grossman thinks the talent in D.C. is better than what he had in Chicago.
He might be right, considering the Bears best receiver in 2006 was Muhsin Muhammad, who caught 60 passes for 863 yards and five scores. However, the duo of Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson rushed for 1,857 yards and twelve touchdowns — numbers that will be difficult to duplicate between Hightower, oft injured Ryan Torrain and rookie Roy Helu.
Rexy gets points for boldness, but talk is cheap, especially in August. He’ll get a chance to start backing up his words on the opening Sunday versus the Giants.
