Redskins To Announce Starting Quarterback On Wednesday

The ‘quarterback controversy’ in Washington will be short lived. The team will announce the starter for this weekend’s game against the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday and supporters of both principles–Rex Grossman and John Beck–are lobbying for their choice.
Grossman threw four interceptions against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday and was benched in favor of John Beck. Beck performed reasonably well, leading the Redskins to their only touchdown in his first regular season action since 2007. As of Monday, coach Mike Shanahan had yet to decide and said that the decision would be forthcoming on Wednesday. In any case, the coach has confidence in both men:
“I believe in Rex, and I believe in John Beck. I told you that from Day One. Both guys, I’m hoping, are going to be here for a long time. … I’ve been around quarterbacks in the National Football League for a long time, and I know these guys have got what it takes.”
Wide receiver Santana Moss thinks that Grossman should be given a little more leeway for one bad game:
“I just feel like as an offense, what we’ve been doing so far this year, Rex has held it down. You just can’t give up on him after one game. First of all, you want your players to support ALL your players — regardless, 1st, 2nd, 3rd-teamers. But we’re going to do what we think is best.”
John Beck wants to play, but he’ll do what is in the best interest of the team:
“I want to play. I want to be the quarterback. But I’m not the one that makes that decision, it’s coach, and they’ll make the best decision for the team. … What’s gonna happen next, I don’t know. But I’ll just do everything I can to be prepared if my number is called.”
Despite the unsettled status of the Redskins’ quarterback situation their Sunday game against the Carolina Panthers at Charlotte, NC is still on the board. The Redskins are a +2 NFL betting underdog with the total set at 44. The game opened with Carolina a -3 favorite but has been bet down from that point, with a couple of 1.5 numbers available as of this writing.
