Randy Moss Is A Tennessee Titan
Added on Nov 04, 2010 by Scott in
Contrary to rumors there were several suitors interested in acquiring Randy Moss, only one team put in a waiver claim for the petulant wide receiver. That team was the Tennessee Titans. The move makes sense for the Titans, who have lost Kenny Britt for an undetermined amount of time with a hamstring injury. Whether or not Moss will be a good fit is yet to be answered, but for now, he has been given a third chance to jump start his career in 2010.
Titans head coach Jeff Fisher expressed confidence that Moss will be a benefit rather than a hindrance:
“Randy’s been a good teammate, and he’s very popular. I think this is a great opportunity for him. It’s a fresh start,” Fisher said. “We’ve got a great locker room. They’ll accept him. I’m confident he’ll accept his new teammates as well.”
Fisher runs a tight ship, but Moss has proven capable of springing a leak in any hull, no matter how sturdy it might seem. Naturally, one of the players most excited about Moss’s arrival is stud running back Chris Johnson, who wasted little time singing his praises:
“Why do we need Randy Moss?” Johnson said Wednesday, before the move was announced. “You can’t put eight in a box if you got Randy Moss out there on the outside. If you’ve got Randy Moss out there, you just can’t play him one-on-one. I feel like Randy would be a great addition to this team, be a great addition to our receiving group and really help us go deep in the playoffs.”
Johnson is correct. Although for his scenario to become a reality, Moss has to be a willing participant, meaning he has to run full speed more than 50% of the time, block downfield and finish off routes even when the ball isn’t coming his direction. Therein lies the rub.
There’s also the not-so small matter of his contract. Moss is still playing on a one-year deal. Unless the Titans make an immediate commitment to him long-term, there’s a risk he will whine and pout about not being respected and/or appreciated by management.
As I wrote yesterday, an unhappy Randy equals a worthless Randy. In a perfect world, he’ll don a boy scout uniform and behave accordingly. However, as we all know, Randy lives in his own world. Expecting him to do a complete about-face would be unrealistic and foolish.
I wish the Titans good luck. Something tells me they’re going to need every bit of it.
