Rams Shopping Number Two Pick

The 2012 NFL Draft is two months away, but that hasn’t stopped the St. Louis Rams from make their intentions known for what they want to do with the number two overall pick. Those intentions don’t include staying put and taking the best player available. Instead, the Rams are in serious discussions to trade the selection and acquire a cache of additional picks to help bolster a roster with several glaring holes.
With franchise quarterback Sam Bradford in place, the new regime of general manager Les Snead and head coach Jeff Fisher are hoping to maneuver back into the first-round since the top two prospects are both signal-callers. Andrew Luck is a shoo-in to be taken first by the Colts, and Robert Griffin III’s stellar Combine performance has vaulted him right behind Luck on many draft boards.
The Rams have reportedly been in talks with a handful of teams willing to jump into the number two slot. Cleveland, Washington and Miami are all hungry to land a big name quarterback prospect, and each is rumored to be interested in Griffin, whose 4.41 40-yard dash over the weekend was the fastest at his position.
Cleveland seems to have soured on Colt McCoy’s long-term potential. Miami has moved on from Chad Henne, but could pursue Green Bay backup Matt Flynn, who is scheduled to be a free agent and is familiar with new Fins coach Joe Philbin. The Redskins combo of Rex Grossman and John Beck failed to turn heads in 2011. All three teams would be wise to consider dealing with St. Louis, if the price is right.
If reports are accurate, the Rams are looking for multiple picks as compensation, including a pair of first-rounders, which is what the Chargers received for shipping Eli Manning to the Giants in 2004.
Sliding back to #4 or #6 would afford them an opportunity to select either Oklahoma State wide receiver Justin Blackmon or LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne, which would fill a position of need.
