Preseason News and Notes
Added on Aug 28, 2012 by Scott in
Friday can’t get here fast enough. The 2012 NFL preseason will mercifully come to an end and the games that count will begin less than a week later. Hooray! Maybe one day the powers that be will come to their senses and eliminate the preseason altogether, or at the very least cut it down to two games. Anyway, there is much to discuss as we creep toward September 5th.
Jets grounded – Thus far the Sanchez-Tebow experiment has looked as bad as everyone with an ounce of logic would’ve presumed. The offense has failed to find the end zone and neither quarterback appears capable of sustaining drives. Jets fans shouldn’t start leaping from ledges, but the future gains don’t look promising.
Wallace wises up – Disgruntled Steelers star Mike Wallace didn’t get a new contract, so he returned to camp today and will reportedly sign his one-year tender. Holdouts rarely yield positive results, especially when an entirely new offensive scheme is being implemented. Don’t expect Wallace to have a very good season.
Davis dealt – The Miami Dolphins’ frustration with former first-round cornerback Vontae Davis reached a tipping point yesterday when they shipped the underachieving player to Indy in exchange for second-round and sixth-round draft picks in 2013. Despite a lack of depth in the defensive backfield, the feeling was the team was better off without the declining Davis.
Cooley cut – Former Pro Bowl tight end Chris Cooley has been released by the Redskins after eight seasons. A series of serious injuries derailed a once promising career. It’s likely another team will give him a look, but it’s safe to wonder how much he has left in the tank.
Bengals battered – Starting center Kyle Cook could miss the 2012 season with undisclosed foot and ankle injuries. They are already without guard Travelle Wharton, who blew out his knee in the exhibition opener. Needless to say, this isn’t good news for the running game or Andy Dalton’s long-term health.
