NFL preseason betting week #2 continues this weekend, and we’ll look at the Green Bay Packers as they take on the Seattle Seahawks in the Jet City on Saturday night.  Seattle won their opening exhibition game, giving former USC coach Pete Carroll his first victory at the helm of the team.  The Packers lost by three to Cleveland.  This game will be broadcast live on the NFL Network in the US.

When everyone and their mom knows about a betting trend, that’s when the sharp players start looking to go the other way.  That’s the situation here—everyone knows that Seattle has been a preseason ATS monster over the past few years, running off 10 straight pointspread covers before Tennessee broke that streak with a backdoor cover last week.  Pete Carroll did manage to pull off the outright victory in his first game as the Seahawks coach, but the fact that the outcome was in doubt until the very end in a game that Seattle should have won easily underscores just what a mess this team is—and particularly on defense.

Green Bay has been a decent preseason team in recent years, off of a 3-1 ATS mark in 2009.  They’re one of the teams that open up their offense in the exhibition campaign before playing it a little closer to the vest in the regular season.  That’s bad news for the Seahawks’ defense—they gave up an opening drive TD to Tennessee’s first team offense last week.  Of bigger concern was their inability to put Tennessee away despite poor play by the Titans’ backup offense.  The Seahawks’ offense wasn’t anything to write home about either, and most of the productivity they did have was due to a solid individual effort from backup and former Clemson standout Charlie Whitehurst (who should be starting over Matt Hasselbeck).

So we’ve got a new coach in something of a ‘letdown’ spot after earning his first win and now must face the reality of rebuilding this mess of a franchise.  Due to the Seahawks ATS streak and their SU victory last week, we’ve got a decent price to work with as well.  Packers are a much better team up and down the roster at this point, and should win this game by a TD plus.

Bet Green Bay +1 over Seattle
