The Miami Dolphins are still looking for their first win of the year having opened the season 0-7. They’ll try again on Sunday as they head to Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City to take on the 4-3 Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs opened the season in horrendous form but have gutted their way to a 4-3 record–good for a three way tie in the AFC West.

The Miami Dolphins are a bad team, but like some of the other teams in the ‘Suck for Luck’ sweepstakes they’re still trying. Right now, the Indianapolis Colts have the inside track at the worst record and the opportunity to draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck. The Dolphins need a quarterback too but they’ve been exerting a strong effort in their last few games and just falling short. This includes an impressive showing on the road against the New York Giants–they didn’t close out the game well and allowed the Giants to pull out the victory but it was an easy pointspread cover. There’s every reason to expect that the Dolphins’ will continue to compete down the stretch and that tendency could earn them the outright victory here. Miami has been a strong investment away from home in recent games–the Dolphins are currently on a 9-4-1 ATS run on the road.

Kansas City, on the other hand, deserves credit for continuing to scrap and earning victories against ‘beatable’ teams. The problem is that they’re not very good either–when your biggest offensive star is your placekicker (Ryan Succop) that’s a problem. They’ve won only once by more than 5 points this season–that was the 28-0 win at Oakland in which Raiders’ QB’s Kyle Boller and Carson Palmer combined for six interceptions. Their running game has struggled this season relative to recent years and their defense has been boosted statistically by the weak opponents they’ve faced but isn’t anything special.

The Chiefs have failed to cover in 8 of their last 12 home games and this is a tough ‘lookahead’ spot with a divisional game against Denver on deck. Look for the Dolphins to get their first win of the year with an outright victory.
