McNabb Traded to Vikings; Jets Resign Holmes

As expected, the moves are flying at a fast and furious rate in the NFL. The latest involves the enigmatic Donovan McNabb, who has been traded from Washington to Minnesota, pending him signing a contract. In other news, the Jets have agreed to terms with wide receiver Santonio Holmes on a five-year deal that will pay him close to $10 million per season.

McNabb has been linked with the Vikings since Brett Favre retired for the 43rd time. The ex-Eagle struggled last season in the nation’s capital, tossing 14 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. In return for his services, the Redskins will reportedly get a pair of sixth-round draft picks.

Again, McNabb must sign off on restructuring his contract before the trade can be completed, but this should be a mere formality. He wants to be a Viking and few other, if any, teams have shown interest. His arrival in Minnesota might help leverage a deal to keep Sidney Rice in purple and gold. Rice, an unrestricted free agent, could fetch a pretty penny on the open market, despite having posted only one productive season during his first four.

Speaking of inconsistent pass catchers, Santonio Holmes is feeling fine after inking a $50 million contract. The Jets made it a priority to retain their top wideout, especially since Braylon Edwards is thought to be on his way out of town.

Holmes will be awarded $24 million guaranteed, which is an exorbitant amount for a wide receiver. He’s notched one 1000-yard season in five years and has never caught more than eight touchdowns in a season. However, he was clutch during the Steelers 2008 playoff run, catching 13 passes for 226 yards and two scores, culminating in the MVP for Super Bowl XLIII.

The jets might not be done revamping their offense. If Edwards leaves, they could pursue either Randy Moss or Plaxico Burress to fill the void opposite Holmes.
