It didn’t take long for the Arizona Cardinals to figure out Matt Leinart wasn’t the answer at quarterback. The former USC Trojan star and Heisman Trophy winner has officially been placed on the trading block. Derek Anderson will again be the starter in the Cards’ preseason finale on Thursday, and presumably in the regular season opener.

Teams like the Giants and Bills have been rumored to be interested in acquiring Leinart, but it’s obvious nobody deems him a starting caliber signal caller. His average at best play and recent comments about head coach Ken Whisenhunt have done nothing to help his cause. It’s possible Arizona could outright release him if they feel he’ll continue to be an unwanted distraction.

Losing out to journeyman Derek Anderson speaks volumes about Leinart’s NFL future. Other than a miraculous nine-game stretch during 2007, Anderson has done very little to show he’s anything more than a adequate backup. He’s also been a turnover machine the last couple years, so expecting him to lead the Cardinals offense in 2010 would be unwise.

That’s not to say Lienart is a better option. He’s had plenty of opportunities to prove he can be the man and failed every time. Whether he gets traded or released or stays put, one thing is perfectly clear. The Matt Leinart bandwagon has been deserted.
