Lee Evans on the Block
Added on Aug 12, 2011 by Scott in
The Lee Evans trade whispers are once again heating up. Evans decline in production over the last two years and the emergence of Stevie Johnson has many pundits speculating Buffalo will unload their former number one receiver sooner rather than later. However, Bills’ brass shot down the rumors, but reports are swirling that Evans could be dealt for the right price.
The 30-year-old Evans is entering his eighth season with the Bills. He’s notched a pair of 1000-yard seasons and scored 43 touchdowns, although his last two seasons have been his worst. In 2009, he took a back seat to Terrell Owens and snagged 44 receptions for 612 yards and seven scores. Last season yielded career lows in both catches and yards opposite Johnson, who broke out in his third year with 82 grabs for 1,082 yards and ten trips for six.
The Bills aren’t exactly loaded with talent, in particular at wideout. Names like Kamar Aiken, Buster Davis, Marcus Easley, Paul Hubbard and Felton Huggins don’t exactly instill fear in the eyes of opposing defensive backs. If they are serious about improving on 2010′s 4-12 record, dumping Evans might not be the best course of action.
Then again, there are plenty of wide receiver hungry teams who might be willing to overpay for Evans’ services at the season opener approaches. Arizona and Baltimore have showed apparent interest, and the Giants, Bucs and Vikings all need added depth in their pass catching corps.
Evans, known for his deep speed and long catches, is confident he can regain his form.
“This is a statistical league, right? So statistically, I didn’t have the numbers I thought I would have or know that I can have,” Evans said. “I know it’s in me. I know it’s there. Given the opportunity, I’m going to do everything I can because that’s the only way I know how to go about things.”
For now, he’s still a Bill. But things change fast in the NFL.
