During the next few weeks, teams will begin massively dropping players from their roster, some of which will be notable names.

The Houston Texans are not above this requirement of NFL teams, and one in particular for the Texans that was released maybe accidentally pushed this team to the next level.

Kris Brown, now former kicker of the Houston Texans, lost his off-season battle with newly added Neil Rackers and was released by the team. I could have talked about any number of Texan players that are or will be released in the near future.

So why Kris Brown?

Since the Houston Texans franchise began in 2002, Kris Brown has been on the roster. And after Chester Pitts was cut, Brown was the last remaining player from that initial team.

Maybe it doesn’t mean much. A kicker doesn’t make a huge difference in a game or season. But he is a former starter, he was maybe the most consistent player in the initial season.

So, as the Texans look to finally get that winning record and make a splash in the playoffs, they are now no question out of the “expansion years”. They aren’t limited by their youth. They have the depth and talent to be competitive week to week. And, they also have no excuse for not playing well this year.

So, good-bye to Kris Brown, but hello to no question being “one of the guys” in the NFL, Houston.
