Jimmy Johnson Survives First Episode Of ‘Survivor’

And now for something completely different. Super Bowl-winning head coach and current FOX NFL analyst Jimmy Johnson is a cast member on the new season of Survivor. Yeah, Survivor is still on the air, and yeah I still watch it. After all these years I still find it to be a fascinating study of human behavior. There’s fierce competition, secret dealmaking, bald-faced lying and vicious backstabbing. What’s not to like?
The 67-year-old Johnson has been sitting on his luxury yacht in the Florida Keys since leaving the coaching ranks eleven years ago. Thus, running around the jungles and beaches of Nicaragua with a bunch of twenty-somethings is a tad out of his element. Not to mention, he’s a wealthy celebrity, which makes him an immediate target on a series where people battle for the right to win a million dollars.
So, how did Jimmy J do on the first episode? Well, he vomited a lot, got no sleep, delivered a lame pep talk, admitted he was a weak link and ultimately avoided being voted off the island. Barely. If not for some cuckoo for Coco Puffs chick from Montana (I think), JJ would’ve been axed. His tribe mates didn’t buy his spiel about not being a threat to win because he’s rich. Plus, at his advanced age, he’s far from being a physical specimen. If he flops during an immunity challenge, it could be lights out (or torch in this case).
I’d be surprised if he lasts much longer, especially if his tribe loses next week. However, the conspiracy theorist in me thinks CBS will keep him around as long as they can to ensure higher ratings. I’m not suggesting these so-called “reality” shows are fixed because that would be disingenuous and wrong. Besides, powerful TV networks would never lie to their audience. Right?
