Green Bay Packers v Chicago Bears

One of reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers’ favorite targets will be in Green Bay for another couple of seasons. Tight end Jermichael Finley agreed to terms on a two-year deal late yesterday that will pay him a whopping $5.75 in 2012 and a gaudy $8.25 million in 2013. Finley was a candidate to be slapped with the franchise tag, which would’ve netted him less money than his new deal.

Finley announced his financial windfall on, where else, Twitter.

“It’s TRUE! Thank you so much to the Packers organization, all of my fans, and my beautiful wife. Happy Bday. Let’s GO Packers!! Back soon…”

The 24-year-old wasn’t done doling out 140 character love.

“I could not be happier to have the privilege of being a Packer for the next 2 yrs. Glad to be back with my team & coaches for 1 common goal.”

Finley, entering his fifth season, set personal bests in receiving yardage and touchdowns in 2011, and tied his career high in receptions with 55. He was poised to have a breakout season, and did of sorts, but was ultimately overshadowed by Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson, who combined for over 2200 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Finley’s 2010 season was cut short by a torn ACL. The lockout prevented him from rehabbing with team doctors, but he entered training camp with a clean bill of health and saw action in all 16 regular season games. However, he was held to three or fewer catches in 10 of 16 and failed to eclipse 90 yards in any one game.

With New England’s Rob Gronkowski and New Orleans Jimmy Graham emerging as elite players at the position, Finley is no longer considered the cream of the crop, but his talent is still off the charts. He has excellent size and speed, and is a potent red zone target.

Another year removed from the knee injury might be all that’s needed to reach his full potential, which is what the Packers are banking on by awarding him such a hefty contract.
