Greg Camarillo Traded to the Vikings a Huge Win-Win
Added on Aug 25, 2010 by Eric Galko in
It’s not too often in the NFL nowadays that a team trades a player to a team in huge need and actually maybe enhances their team. We’ve seen the Santonio Holmes and Brandon Marshall trades that was out of locker room and off-the-field necessity. And we’ve seen the McNabb trade that didn’t quite get the quarterback out of the Eagles’s mind.
But this trade of Greg Camarillo to the Vikings in exchange for Benny Sapp shipped to the Dolphins may actually be very beneficial to both sides.
Greg Camarillo may be a near forgotten guy in the NFL, especially on the Dolphins where their youth and free agent signings have really made a huge impact. However, Camarillo is a guy that coach Tony Sparano, GM Jeff Ireland, and Vice President Bill Parcels actually made a point to comment on, saying that he was the type of tough, willing player that they wanted to bring in.
Brought in in 2008, he maybe is most notably known for catching and running for a touchdown in Miami’s only with in 2008 against the Steelers. In 2009, he was riddled with injuries, and although he was primed to be their 2nd or 3rd option, he couldn’t seem to consistently stay on the field.
Its been well document by now that the Vikings are in dire need of recevier help. Percy Harvin has been suffering with migraines and will be a huge question mark throughout the season. Sidney Rice just went under the microscope and got hip surgery, and he’ll be back no earlier than the 5th or 6th week of the season.
Right now, Bernard Berrian is the top guy, who isn’t bad at all. However, the number two guy? Well, umm, welcome Greg Camarillo! He’ll likely be trading off production with Percy Harvin opposite Berrian until Harvin is 100 percent, and then getting even less time when Rice returns. Still, he’s a huge upgrade from newly signed Javon Walker.
In exchange for Camarillo, the Dolphins got Benny Sapp, who should step in right away as the dime or even nickel cornerback, and his depth is key if the Dolphins hope to hang with the 3 or 4 receiver loaded teams like the Patriots and Jets all year.
The Dolphins in the end really needed to let a receiver go. Brandon Marshall is their number one, and Davone Bess and Brian Hartline are their slot and number two guys of the future. Also, Patrick Turner has played well in training camp, and his size is one that can’t be passed on if he’s playing adequately.
The Vikings really needed a receiver, and with Winfield and Griffin at cornerback and Marcus McCauley still developing, Sapp wasn’t a huge need.
Rare win-win for both teams. And look, the Vikings came up, and Brett Favre didn’t even come up!
