Only when it involves Tim Tebow is the headline above considered ‘news’. ESPN is reporting a story based on quotes from Denver Broncos’ cornerback Champ Bailey that he wants to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Here’s the comment by Bailey that ESPN apparently considers incendiary:

“Oh, he’s going to challenge him, absolutely. Sanchez can’t feel too comfortable in his seat. If he keeps playing well, he doesn’t have to worry about it. But if he doesn’t play well, we all know what’s going to happen next.”

Shocking. Now let me get this straight–if Mark Sanchez plays well he’ll hold on to his job as starting quarterback. If not, Tebow may think that he’s better qualified to lead the team. Diabolical.

Bailey’s jaw dropping revelations continued–he says that while Tebow wouldn’t mind being a situational player in the short term that he won’t be content with that role in the long term. The chilling bottom line, in Bailey’s view, he’ll want to be a starter at some point in his career. And what is Tebow willing to do to make his twisted dream a reality? According to Bailey, he’ll actually put in the work for it.:

“I think he’ll do it. Will he like doing it for the rest of his career? I don’t think so. I think this is a short-term thing. The guy will be a starter at some point, whether it’s here or somewhere else, because he’s going to work to get it done.”

And Tebow doesn’t miss a trick–according to Bailey he paves the way for his Machavellian plans by being a class act and a great teammate:

“The one thing that made it easy to deal with was the way he handled it. He handled it with a lot of class, very professional. I love him to death. He’s a great kid. I wish him the best. Whatever he gets, he deserves.”

The media’s coverage of Tebow is appalling. Since he’s been traded to New York the national sports media–particularly ESPN–has all but demanded a sworn affidavit that Tebow won’t seek the starting job, nor will head coach Rex Ryan give it to him. Of course Tebow wants to start. Every quarterback at every level of football wants to start. And every quarterback’s ultimate aspiration is to start in the NFL. In fact, were I coaching a NFL team I wouldn’t want a quarterback that was content being a backup. The situation in New York is no different than every other NFL team. Even more amazing–ESPN takes Bailey’s comments that a) Sanchez–like every other starting QB–needs to play well to keep his job, b) Tebow will put in the work to become a NFL starter and c) he’s a great guy and class act and manages to turn them into a negative.
